Every word we use on a daily basis carries a conceptual framework behind it. Studies indicate that the average human employs over 4800 words daily. However, it's important to note that many of these words are used without a comprehensive understanding of their underlying concepts. Examples of such frequently used concepts include "need," "goal," "problem," "plan," and more.
Among these concepts, "need" holds a prominent position, as it is commonly expressed in various situations. We often mention our need for a house, car, high-paying job, or clothes, among other things.
Then do you know the conception of NEED?
It is pretty easy to check it. Define NEED in one sentence. And if you can't do it in 30 seconds, it means you don't know the conception of the word. On the other hand, you don't have an knowledge of NEED concept in your mind. But if you manage to write it in the above period, it means that you have thought about it before.
As not recognizing the concepts that are used commonly, there would be conflicts in understanding between family, colleagues or friends. Therefore, there would be many negative results occur.
According to the systematic thinking method, any concept consists of properties, and those properties must meet the following requirements. It includes:
- Conception contains few properties;
- The properties must not be ambiguous and understood in a single sense;
- It must be easy to define the criteria of the properties;
- The properties must be logically connected.
As considering examples of the definition of 'need' from several sources:
In the dictionary of the Mongolian language, "Need is the requirement to demand something necessary for the existence of a living body, an individual, a social group, or an entire society.
In Wikipedia encyclopedia, "A need is something that is necessary for an organism to live a healthy life". Translated into Mongolian, "need" is things that are necessary for a living body to live healthy.
Business dictionary site /businessdictionary.com/ defines it as "A motivating force that compels action for its satisfaction". Translated into Mongolian, "The power to motivate action to create satisfaction.
In the textbook of economics, "Need is the unfulfilled desire and requirement of a person." and so on.
If we classify the properties reflected in the above definitions and analyze their interrelationships:
- Needs are defined by different properties, such as requirements, things, and forces.
- Requirement itself calls for redefinition. Many sources define requirements as items. But the concept of THING cannot be defined and classified.
- The meaning of the concepts of living body, individual, social group and society is HUMAN. Therefore, the meaning of these properties are overlapped.
- The concepts of survival, healthy living, and satisfaction also have overlapping meanings. They contain the concepts of being alive and living.
Then let's try to figure out a definition that eliminates the above disadvantages!
It has the following common properties. It includes:
1. A need is a requirement.
2. A need is a necessity to be satisfied while a person is alive.
3. Needs are the necessities of life.
Summing up the above types:
"Needs are the requirements that must be met for human existence and living." is the right definition. Reader, do you agree with the above definition?
